Thursday’s Show

May 24th, 2012

Update: Kentucky defeated Mississippi State this afternoon 5-1 in Hoover, Alabama.

The Kentucky baseball team is in action this afternoon in the SEC tournament against Mississippi State.  The Cats were swept last weekend by the Bulldogs and are looking for a little payback.  We’ll give you insight and analysis on the out come tonight.

Amazingly enough, John Calipari’s scheduling has been called into question by a group called the Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics (COIA).  This is stunning because people are now offended by the way Kentucky schedules.

Matt Norlander of CBS Sports writes that this group is trying to get people (schools) to not give into UK’s wish to play at neutral court sites…as if UK’s the only school that does that.   Doesn’t this panel realize that UK has to play someone in these made for TV games?  So, in theory, if UK is benefiting then isn’t fair to argue that the other team benefits from this experience?  Is there outrage that Notre Dame has an exclusive national TV contract with NBC?

This 59 member panel needs to get a life because it’s only issue because UK’s doing it.  Duke has been the king of the neutral court game until recently.  Funny, there wasn’t any outrage then.  We’ll definitely talk about this tonight.

Plus, we’re talking football on the show tonight.  The Mayor of UK Football, Lonny Demaree, will join us for a lively debate about the upcoming UK season.

Also, John Calipari gave us a hint as to what the Kentucky basketball schedule will look like next year and beyond with blog post on his website on Wednesday.  Do you feel better about dropping Indiana?  We’ll discuss what the Cats future schedules mean.

The show kicks off at 6pm

Hour 1 (Lonny Demaree)
Hour 2 (Jeff Drummond)

Notes:

Here’s Cal’s post about the upcoming schedule.  He’s got some interesting plans that any Cat fan of any age can understand.

Myron Medcalf takes a close look at the return of the dominant defensive big man with his latest blog post.  Myron discusses and ranks the top shot blockers in the college game.  Nerlens Noel makes an appearance near the top.

Jabari Parker is the top player in the 2013 class and the Cats want him badly.  Find out what makes Parker tick…I think you’ll find he’s an impressive kid.

Wednesday’s Show

Josh Teater

We’ll talk a little bit of everything on Wednesday’s show.  The Lexington Herald Leader’s Mark Story will join us to talk about all things Kentucky.

PGA touring pro, Josh Teater, will join us to talk about some golf and preview the upcoming US Open.  Jeff Drummond has the recruiting game covered with his daily update.

The show lifts off at 6pm tonight.

Hour 1 (Mark Story)
Hour 2 (Jeff Drummond and Josh Teater)

Notes:

John Calipari gives us a few insights to UK’s upcoming basketball schedules.  Coach Cal say’s that UNC’s absence from the Cats schedules will be short.  UK is also in discussion with Duke for a multi year, neutral site game to be played at different sites every year.  Also, Baylor is coming to Rupp this year and will give the Bears a return game next season at the Dallas Cowboys stadium.

Kentucky will play Mississippi State on Thursday afternoon in the SEC Tournament.  The Bull Dogs defeated top seed LSU 3-2 on Wednesday.  The Dogs swept UK this past weekend in Starkville.

Larry Vaught is killing it with interesting articles.  Today’s installment gives UK fans an interesting perspective on UK football from a former player that wished to remain anonymous.

Tuesday’s Show

The Kentucky baseball team starts it’s push for an SEC title this morning against Ole miss in Hoover, Alabama.  The Cats are the fourth seed and if they win they’ll play on Thursday.  Should they lose, they play again on Wednesday morning.

WHAS’s Kent Spencer will join us tonight to talk about the Cats performance and handicap their chances of winning the conference.

We’re going to talk some UK football with Jeff Drummond of the Cats Pause get a recruiting update as well.

The Larry Glover Live kicks off at 6pm with our guests and a blend of callers tonight on 590, WVLK.

Hour 2 (Jeff Drummond)

Notes:

Montrezl Harrell listed his top 4 choices via twitter today.   Louisville, Cincinnati, Alabama, and Florida top his list.  UK is noticeably absent…by choice.  The word is that the Big Blue is not interested.

Brandon Knight was named to the All-Rookie team this afternoon.  Knight received 13 first team votes and 40 overall, tied for fifth.

Mark Story of the Herald Leader wrote about the winners and losers in conference realignment.  Story say’s Kentucky could make out better than U of L.  Mark will join us on Wednesday night.

The great Dan Wetzel writes about the future of the Big East and the ACC and what their could have done to prevent they demise.

More expansion on the horizon?  David Sandhop of Aggie Insider say’s, according to sources, that the SEC is targeting UNC and either Virginia or Virginia Tech.  He also states that Clemson and FSU is very likely.  Bad news for Louisville?

The Boston Celtics defeated Philadelphia last night in the Eastern Conference Semi-finals.  Rajon Rondo paced the Celts with 13 points and 14 assists.  Larry Vaught has nice article on Rondo where Tubby Smith talks about Rajon’s time at Kentucky.

The Cincinnati Reds continue to surge with a 4-1 win over Atlanta.  Drew Stubbs led the way when he went deep twice.  Zack Cozart and pitcher Mike Leake also homered.

Monday’s Show

May 21st, 2012

Gary Henderson

The Kentucky baseball team let the SEC regular season championship slip away in Mississippi this past weekend.  The Cats were swept by the Bulldogs dropping UK to a #4 seed in the SEC tournament.

UK will play Ole Miss Tuesday morning at Hoover Stadium in Birmingham at 10am.  An NCAA bid is assured but a poor showing this week might end any thoughts of playing the opening weekend at Cliff Hagan Stadium.  We’ll talk about it tonight with Reds announcer Doug Flynn.

Congratulations to Wildcat head coach Gary Henderson.  The Cats skipper was named the SEC’s Coach of the Year.  Brian Adams has decided to hang of the football cleats and focus on baseball.  That could be a blow to Joker Phillips’ team next season.

Jeff Drummond is killing it with tons of football recruiting intel.  we’ll get tabs on who you should thinking about on the football front.

We will also take your calls and comments tonight beginning at 6pm on Larry Glover Live.

Hour 1
Hour 2 (Jeff Drummond and Doug Flynn)

Notes:

The college football top 25′s are already cueing revealed.  ESPN just released it’s early poll (one of many, I’m sure).  Six SEC teams are in the mix with LSU at number 1.  No, Kentucky is not ranked.

The NBA draft isn’t too far away and the executives told Larry Vaught that they’re noticing what UK fans appreciated all season long…the motor of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

There’s a new sherif in town for the Cincinnati Reds.  Aroldis Chapman is the new closer in the ‘Nati.  By the way, the Reds took 2 of 3 this weekend at Yankee Stadium and they’re now just .5 game behind the Cardinals.

Friday’s Show

May 18th, 2012

Coming up on Friday night, we’re going to talk a little college football.  The SEC and the Big 12 have agreed to have regular season champs meet in a new and unnamed bowl.

The new agreement is seen as the first step to a four super conference alignment that could mean the end of the ACC and the Big East.  We’ll talk about what it means tonight on the show.

Kentucky baseball is back in action tonight in Starkville, Mississippi.  The Cats now trail South Carolina by percentages and lead LSU by a half game and Florida by one game.  The Cats can win the SEC or finish fourth…a big difference.

The second leg of the horse racing triple crown is set for tomorrow afternoon in Baltimore.  We’ll conduct our annual Preakness contest throughout tonight’s show.

Jeff Drummond has the recruiting covered including an update on Montrezl Harrell.  Harrell say’s that the Cats have indeed contacted him and that he’s interested.

The show kicks off at 6pm with your calls and comments tonight on Larry Glover Live.

Hour 1

Hour 2 (Jeff Drummond)

Update:

Kentucky Basketball is getting some positive pub today.  SI’s Andy Glockner say’s that Julius Mays and Ryan Harrow are two of the 10 biggest impact transfers for next season.

Slam Magazine has three future Wildcats on their annual High School All-American Team.  Nerlens Noel, Alex Poythress and Archie Goodwin were selected to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd teams respectively.

Kerry Wood retired today ending a mixed emotions career.  It began with a burst that was derailed by injuries.  Kerry tossed, in his estimation, the greatest game in baseball history with a 20K, 0 walk, 1-hit gem against Astros in 1998.  It’s hard to argue with his assessment…he is an infield single away from a 20K perfect game.

Kyle Tucker

Kyle Tucker, take 2.  We missed Kyle yesterday but we’ve got good news…we’ve rescheduled with the Courier Journal’s UK beat writer and he’ll appear tonight in hour 1 to talk some UK football.

Jeff Drummond of the Cats Pause has a recruiting update including the latest on Montrezzl Harrell, who was finally released from his commitment from Virginia Tech.

Plus, we’re going to talk some Kentucky basketball with Glenn Logan from Sea of Blue.  The Kentucky Wildcats have the overall number one player coming into college hoops next season and perhaps the one with the most impact of the 1st year players, so say’s Myron Medcalf.   However, does Kentucky have enough coming in next season to compete for a national title?  We’ll debate these topics and more with Glenn.

Hour 1 (Kyle Tucker)
Hour 2 (Jeff Drummond and Glenn Logan)

Notes:

ESPN say’s that it’s UCLA, not Kentucky, that has the best recruiting class in America.  If so, that would end the Cats run of three straight top classes.  ESPN’s Dave Telep chatted today about the debate of who is number one and would the Wildcats move to the top if they get Harrell (yes).

Last summer, when they took a service trip to Ethiopia with head coach Joker Phillips, Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart and others, Danny Trevathan and Stuart Hines weren’t entirely sure what was in store for them. The experience ended up being a life-changing one, with the two rising seniors witnessing a culture and a lifestyle unimaginably far removed from their own.

On Friday, a new group of rising seniors will follow in the footsteps of Hines and Trevathan and make the same trip with Phillips at their side. For a year now, Mikie Benton, Matt Smith and Larry Warford have listened to stories and seen photographs from the weeklong trip and, even though the trio has an idea what lies ahead, that doesn’t mean they expect it to have any less of an impact on them.

ESPN’s Andy Katz talks logos, Murray State and the NCAA’s 75th anniversary in today’s edition of the 3-Point Shot.

Coming up:
Monday night; Doug Flynn
Tuesday Night; Kent Spencer
Wednesday Night; Mark Story, Josh Teater

Wednesday’s Links

May 16th, 2012

We are now heading into the dog days of summer…at least soon.  That means the focus begins to be directed at UK football.  Coming up on the show tonight, we’ll talk to Kyle Tucker about next season’s Wildcats.

Larry Vaught is hitting the football beat with his Vaught’s Views column today.  Larry talks to Mike Cassity about the coaching staff.   Cassity tells Vaught that the coaching staff is committed to improving even if it means telling the boss, Joker Phillips, what he does’t want to hear.

Yesterday we talked a little about the financial aspects of college athletics.  The story was based on the information provided by USA Today’s Database.  Well Eric Crawford delves into the matter a little deeper in his column today  to show how the numbers are crunched and how they can tell different stories based on what’s included in the numbers.

Kentucky baseball lost another mid week game last night in Paducah against Murray State.  UK is focused on an SEC title that they can clinch this weekend against Mississippi State.  Our friend Matt May of the Cats Pause profiles the Cats title chase this weekend in Starkville.

A tough break for Joe Crawford.  The former Wildcat injured his knee and could be out for as much as six months.  you can read more about it here.

Gregg Doyel thanked Coach K in his column today for restoring America to basketball dominance.  The Duke coach say’s that 2012 will be his last as the coach for Team USA.  So who replaces him?

Doyel tweeted, “USA players WANT to play for Coach K. Top coach I see who fits that bill for 2016? John Calipari.”

We’ll hit the top stories of the day and offer witty commentary in addition to taking your calls tonight beginning at 6pm on Larry Glover Live.
